                                           History 1930-1950
During the late 1920-1930’s. Clifford suffered some harsh setbacks. The Rev. J.W Simmons became pastor in 1928 with an already declining membership being a concern. Membership went from 104 members in 1927 to only 48 in 1931. Services were reduced to once a month. In 1932 Rev. Grey Liggon of Lynchburg became pastor until 1935, however, membership remained at a standstill. But as you know we serve an awesome God and He didn’t want Clifford to fail.

In 1936 under the guidance of Rev. A.L. Shumate attendance began to grow here. By 1939, church membership was at 93, however, another difficult time began as it pierced the heart of Clifford Baptist Church – World War II. 19 members of our church were called to protect our lives and freedom.
